Beauty of Far North Queensland

Flight Check Travel advisors from around Australia at One Kangaroo Island in February 2022.

When individuals contemplate a laid-back holiday in Queensland, popular choices often include Brisbane, Gold Coast, and Sunshine Coast. However, for your upcoming visit to the Sunshine State, we strongly suggest exploring the less-explored destinations in Far North Queensland—where the Great Barrier Reef resides, offering numerous rejuvenating experiences.

Kim Ross, a Travel Advisor from Ross & Turner Travel Associates, recently treated her family to a vacation in Far North Queensland. She graciously shares her memorable moments below, hoping to inspire others to explore this serene and beautiful part of Australia.

Inflight Impressions: “The airports are notably less crowded, streamlining the check-in process. Upon boarding, masks and wipes are distributed, and stringent cleanliness measures are strictly enforced.” – Kim Ross.

Cairns

Our holiday commenced in Cairns, where we chose to stay at Riley, a Crystalbrook Collection Resort. Our accommodations in a Family Room provided stunning ocean views. The resort itself boasted numerous delightful pools that kept the kids entertained for hours. Additionally, complimentary bike hire and excellent dining options, including Rocco – the city’s highest rooftop bar and restaurant offering panoramic views of the Coral Sea, added to the overall experience. Outside the resort, the boys embarked on fishing trips, while the girls opted for a more leisurely exploration of Cairns and the local Aquarium.

Port Douglas

Following our time in Cairns, our journey led us to Port Douglas, where we had the pleasure of staying in two distinct resorts. Initially, we enjoyed the comforts of Pullman Port Douglas Sea Temple Resort & Spa, residing in a Two Bedroom Swimout Room. This particular accommodation proved ideal for our kids, with the pool conveniently located right outside our door. The resort itself was truly exceptional, providing a perfect blend of a tranquil atmosphere and a variety of enjoyable amenities.

Our second accommodation was at the Sheraton Grand Mirage Resort in the lavish Presidential Suite. This extraordinary resort is immersed in 147 hectares of lush tropical gardens and features two hectares of glistening salt-water lagoons. The luxurious amenities, including a swim-up bar, cabanas for leisurely relaxation, an 18-hole golf course, and revamped bars and restaurants, made this stay our absolute favorite.

During our time in Port Douglas, we embarked on an excursion to the outer reef. My 13-year-old indulged in an introductory dive, while my three-year-old and I delighted in observing the vibrant marine life. Thanks to restrictions, there was ample space on board, enhancing the overall experience. Our Port Douglas adventure wouldn’t be complete without a visit to Mossman Gorge in the Daintree Rainforest. With few travelers in the area, we had the entire Gorge to ourselves, creating a truly memorable and intimate experience.

“This was the perfect family getaway where the whole family was able to relax and have fun – all without even leaving the country.”
